Sheffield: Im contracted to work at Monsoon 2-6 Thursdays. Can they force me to work til 6 on xmas eve (a wednesday)?
i am a full time student and live in kent but study in warwickshire (and work in the monsoon shop there.) i told my boss i wouldnt be around over xmas, as xmas day falls on a thursday, my contracted day, and the shop is closed. She refused this, and said i had to work until 6pm on xmas eve and provided train times, which could get me home at 10pm xmas eve. my parents cant pick me up from the station or anything and its out of the question im not spending xmas away from my family!! Do i have to quit? Will i be sacked if i dont turn up having told her i cant do it (and she ignored me)?? please help!...

Personally I hate to see all the jobs lost however I do not support the bail out unless the big 3 have a plan to revamp and change the way they do business. There is no point in investing 28 billion into the companies that will just run business as usual. While Honda builds a new plant in Indiana the big 3 have unfortunately branded the reputation for building unreliable vehicles. Also, the big 3 need to deunionize, they can not be competitive unless they stop paying their employees 75 dollars an hour while foreign auto makers in the US pay alot less and are non union.
