Henley On Thames: How much charity is too much to be expected?
I need some outside opinions on this. A few days ago, I got up to a note on my door. It was from a man who said he and his wife had both been laid off and so they were going around trying to earn money by painting house numbers on the sidewalk. Well, my husband and I aren't exactly well-off ourselves, but we could afford to help out a little, so when this guy came around again, I gave him fifteen dollars (all I had on me at the time, which was triple what he'd asked for anyway), and gave him the standard If there's anything else we can do line. He thanked me and left. Yesterday morning at around eight, while we're still shuffling around in our jammies...

Henley On Thames: How do you get involved in Christmas Cheer or Christmas Charities in North Carolina?
My husband and I are both unemployed, he was laid off in October, and with our local economy (as with everywhere else) jobs are very scarce. We are already getting assistance from WIC, Medicaid and Food stamps, but due to no money, and what little we do get our hands on from selling things we run across we don't need, and from my dad who has been helping as much as he possibly can...we won't be able to provide for my little girl for Christmas. I have heard of a few Christmas Charities around the country, but Im wondering what all is offered around my area (Graham, NC) and how to get involved with them to possibly get assistance to provide my little girl with a Christmas....

Henley On Thames: Charity shops; will they move into middle-class areas now that credit is harder?
There are plenty of charity shops in shabby areas of our towns. But now that managerial staff are losing their jobs, will we see select areas sprouting Oxfam and similar outlets?...

Henley On Thames: Donating to charity in retail store? ?

Henley On Thames: What charity would you start?
If you could start your own charity, what would it be? I would start a homeless house. I would buy a big vacant hotel & renovate it. This would give people a physical address. Then I would help them in whatever way they needed help with whether it be counseling, therapy, safety, financial.... whatever. I would provide job training and financial management courses. Volunteers would provide the services and a thrift shop would provide the income along with charitable donations. That would be so much fun to me. Oh... I would also have a food pantry for people who aren't homeless but need food. So, what would you do?...

Henley On Thames: I am incompetant at my job?
I was hired for a job at which I was underqualified. I think they picked me because I would be cheaper than someone with an MBA. I am totally out of my depth. The problem is 1. I really need the job 2. If I quit I suspect they would put someone even worse. I accepted the low pay because I love the work. (it is charity related) For what they are paying they are getting something OK I guess. No person with the MBA/Legal & IT skills needed would accept the pay, I guess unless they were like me and doing it for the love of it, but I can easily see them just putting a relative in or something which would be out of the frying pan, into the fire. What do I do, please. I don...

Henley On Thames: Whats wrong with this current generation?
I'm part of the generation called Generation Me. (i'm 21) And from articles i have red there seems to be this idea that my generation is very entitled and selfish. I believe this to be true. I can't name anyone of my peers or friends who are not looking for their own best interest first. None give to charity or do any volunteer work (if they did it was to bolster their resume for college) I'm one of the only people i know that has a steady 9-5 job. out of all y friends I'm the only one who makes an actually salary. All of my friends and peers work crappy minimum wage jobs, part-time and somehow have enough money to go to the bar and clubs. Nobody in my generation see...

Henley On Thames: Rate my Personal Statement :)?
Hi there, well im looking to study Chinese at Leeds University, and well that uni is quite popular. So what do you think of my PS? The more criticism the better, and everything is appreciated. Thanks a bunch! ---- The art of the Chinese language has long been a source of beauty, but contrasting this beauty is its mystery. The near endless amount of culture, history and philosophy that China holds has always left me in awe, and is a reason why I would gladly spend part of my life studying it. My interest in East Asia began when I was introduced to the phenomenon that is anime, Japanese animations. This was the seed that produced the roots of interest that grew further, diversifying my inte...

Henley On Thames: CEFA or INTRO TO INVESTMENT?
Hello everyone. I wonder if you could help me out. I am considering studying for a finance – related qualification but am not sure whether I should go for a CEFA 1 or Introduction to Investment. I am interested in both and my decision will depend on what types of jobs I could go for after becoming qualified. I am aware that completion of the CEFA leads to a position as a financial adviser and Intro to Investment in a position within shares and bonds. My questions are:· Which qualification is ‘stronger’ i.e. more popular with employers?·What other jobs would I have a chance in getting relevant to each qualification. For example, can a CEFA help my career prospects in any sales bas...
