Colchester: Waiters: DO you love the hospitality industry? ?
Why or why not: Back Story: after climbing into the industry two years ago, My second job has always been bartending or serving. My first (9-5) job is Marketing. It is always hard to find a position that starts at 6:00 PM. . . but I have managed for a few years. In my particular case now, I am in desperate need of advice. I accepted a cocktail waitress position in August at a wine and martini bar in a great “yuppie” neighborhood over a choice bartending position downtown. After speaking with both owners I believed the martini bar would be a better place to beef up my bartending skills, service attitude and perhaps move to management in the future. The mar...

Colchester: retraining versus crappy job i like.?
I left uni during my first year and have been managing ever since in the hospitality trade doing pubs, clubs, wine bars and restaurants. Its probably the only job I can imagine myself doing and certainly the only one I can think of I would actually enjoy doing. Problem is, it doesnt pay that well, the hours are awful, it takes over your life and isnt the most reliable of professions in the world. Mr dream would be to continue doing this job while still relatively young at 25, working abroads in US or Canada but it seems that this is going to be impossible thanks to anal immigration laws. I know I wouldnt enjoy it, but I have been considering re-training for a career in IT but dont know...

Colchester: Question about American waiters.?
In Australia waiters and bartenders are basically teenage and mid 20's girls, more or less, its what you'd expect to see. There are a noteable number of exceptions. Most people in college just go and work at Coles or something.. because our wages are about $17-$20 an hour for those sorts of jobs. In the USA I understand wages are much lower, but servers make a lot more money, so it is the job to have to get through college. I understand small businesses and sleazy type places would not hire men. Wondering with the chain type places do they hire males ? and do the waiters make much money there ? Would the average bloke be able to do that sort of job. Over here there w...
