Brighton: Studying a PhD in philosophy - career prospects?
Hi there
I've graduated in philosophy and really enjoyed it and am considering continuing and doing a PhD. My marks were good, but not good enough to get a scholarship at a very good university. I might have a chance at a less reputable university, but considering there are so few jobs in academia, is it worth doing a PhD in something like philosophy if your career prospects are slim? I don't want to spend 5 years (or more) working at something to end up in the same position I'm at now if I can't secure an academic job.
If I do decide to do it, and complete it successfully, what other kinds of jobs could a PhD holder in philosophy do? Researching other areas?... 23 Nov 08, 12:11:19
Brighton: Should I apply to Binghamton University?
I have a good chance for Binghamton University with my grades and extracurricular activities however I live in New York City. People tell me to apply to Binghamton but I do not want to dorm. I like the academics of CUNY Baruch College however Binghamton University is well known and it is a good base school to transfer to top graduate schools. What should I do? Does the name of an undergraduate university or college mean a lot when transferring to other schools after 2 yrs or for graduate studies or even job placement? Should I apply even though I do not wish to dorm and people around me pressure me to apply? I need feedback from people who I do not know. Thank you.... 23 Nov 08, 12:11:43
Brighton: How do I get my mom o understand that my brother won’t learn his lesson if she keeps trying to fix everything?
My mother has always been a very protective person when it comes to keeping bad things from happening to my brother and I. She always wants to fix everything for us to make sure that we don’t get hurt. The only problem with this is that because of this my brother never learns. He always knows our mom is going to come to his rescue no matter what.
My brother recently was placed on academic probations, I asked my mom to please let him work it out himself because he was the one who messed up and he needs to learn to fix it. Instead she rushed down and tried to get everything straightened up, not that it worked, so that brother did not have to try and do it himself.
Because of his acad... 22 Nov 08, 06:11:36
Brighton: is it too late? some career advice?
hi.
i am doing my undergrad degree in bioengineering right now. i have chosen this major cos i love biology and i used to be good at maths and physics. and i chose this one over biomed sciences cos i think it's more challenging and the career prospects are better.
now i found out that it was a huge mistake. after all, i am not enjoying the extra maths and physics from my engineering degree course and the little or nonexistent biology component of it.
i recently read an article about 'women in science' written by an academic from MIT and i knew where i went all wrong.
i have a very friendly, bubbly and helpful character which makes me better suited for jobs that are more pe... 22 Nov 08, 04:11:44

Brighton: I need help deciding my major!?
I'm going to college this January. I have no clue what I want to major in. I know that I do not have to decide my major until the end of my sophomore year but I would like to at least narrow my decision down. I'm going to give you a little background info on me. I'm pretty handy with computers. I can unassemble and reassemble them pretty easily. I like technology, specifically new technology. Say for example, I purchased a laptop that was supposed to have all the new features, then a month later another company comes out with a newer version. I would sell my month-old laptop and purchase the new one; I like all types of new technology. However, this may be a lot of people as w... 21 Nov 08, 04:11:29
Brighton: Editing a book that my husband's writing... will a publisher allow me to do this?
My husband is currently writing a book and is asking me to edit it. I have a B.A. in English with an emphasis in professional writing.
Editing is my strong suit, so whenever he completes it, I'd like to have that editing work on my resume since I have only a few months of real-world editing experience aside from my academic experience.
For those of you familiar with the ins and outs of writing and getting published, is this a feasible option? I'm hoping that editing an entire novel will serve as a good stepping stone for when I decide to take on a steady editing job later on.
Any advice on this is appreciated!... 21 Nov 08, 04:11:05
