PURPOSE OF ROLE
To be a pro-active Communications Manager for both the Charity and commercial subsidiary. To co-ordinate the communications functions to promote the ogranisation in a positive and progressive way through external (particularly media) and internal channels, in line with overall marketing and communications strategy and focus
RESPONSIBILITY AREAS
- To assist in the implementation of sound communication strategies, with the emphasis on external press and public relations. To ensure that the PR systems used are accurate and effective in delivering timely activities
- To act as the main point of contact for media and implement a proactive and reactive media strategy on behalf of the organisation by producing suitable press releases and editorial, organising and conducting media interviews where agreed and evaluating the effectiveness of activities for continuous improvement and measurement
- To build good working relationships with identified key national and trade media contacts and to ensure these contacts are relevant and up to date
- To plan and project manage overall communication strategies for individual campaigns or the Policy & Research Division (mainly research) outputs, this may include events and other non-desk based activity from time to time
- To produce effective, consistent and integrated communications for diverse target audiences, including press releases, some member correspondence as required, the website and other online channels, ensuring website content reflects current external press activity accurately
- To support senior management on over-arching business communications strategies
- To evaluate and report progress to senior management and Public Affairs Group (“PAG”), monitoring of press coverage and production of reports as required
- To support the Director of Marketing & Communications as required with other marketing & communications activities where required such as exhibitions, events, shows and other public facing events
- Participation in the press office team media rota to ensure accessibility at all times (especially out of normal office hours) to the media
- There is a requirement to maintain a high degree of pro-activity in actively “selling in” stories to relevant media
CONTROLS
- PAG and current external affairs
- Press coverage achieved (positive, relevant, timely)
- One to one monthly review with Director of Marketing & Communications
- Appraisal process
KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE AND KEY COMPETENCIES
- Significant PR agency or in-house press office experiences is essential, ideally gained in the automotive, fleet, motoring services sectors (familiarity with public affairs campaigns and generating positive coverage in a policy-driven environment also important)
- PR or Marketing qualification desirable
- Track record of ‘selling in’ stories to generate pro-active coverage
- First rate written and verbal communication skills and ability to communicate effectively at all levels Project management skills, and product management skills including ability to deliver on time and budget
- IT literate on Microsoft Office
- Willing to work flexibly
