Job Description: Optical Design Engineer / Engineer / SONET Engineer / Optical Engineer / Network engineerLondonSalary £45,000 - £50,000Our client provides high bandwidth connectivity solutions for business and carriers. Its private optical network delivers key network and IP services in and among top U.S. and European markets.They currently have an exciting opportunity for an Optical Engineer to join their expanding Technology department. Providing capacity management of their European Longhaul and Metro WDM backbone networks you will plan, design and document solutions based on systems using the latest 40G/100G architectures. With a focus on customer generated requirements you will also provide the role of design authority to the in house Sales and Solutions teams. You will be supported by the Optical Engineering function with access to detailed training and expertise as well as having direct relationships with equipment vendors in region. In addition to possessing a working knowledge of optical transmission design principles and common protocols an in-depth understanding of fibre types, chromatic dispersion, polarization mode dispersion, power budgeting, ORL, wavelength planning and traffic analysis would be advantageous. The ideal candidate will have a degree level education relating to technology, engineering or computer science or equivalent. With a substantial amount of experience in the design of WDM based solutions you will have an in-depth understanding of components in optical telecommunications networks. Working knowledge of modern WDM transmission equipment along with an understanding of protocols including Ethernet, SONET/SDH and Fibre-Channel would be essential for this role.
